PROSPERITY = “ONE” (P=1)
Opportunity + Necessity + Entrepreneurship (ONE) = Prosperity (P=1)
Opportunity is the father of entrepreneurship. Necessity is the mother of entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurship is the spirit of creativity, innovation and risk taking. Productivity = Prosperity
Entrepreneurship is the spirit of productivity. It is the ability to identify a necessity and create an opportunity. It is about problem solving and opportunity finding, which leads to impact and profit respectively. Prosperity is measured both in terms of value (impact) and valuables (wealth). Productivity is one of the indicators of prosperity. Entrepreneurs can be productive on a regular basis if they do the following:
Practice OQP (Only Quality Purposes)
Read Every day and Discover
Organize resources
Deploy resources
Utilize opportunities
Create something of value
Trade with your talents
Invest in people
Volunteer always
Entertain yourself
Practice oqp (only quality purposes)
There are many activities begging for entrepreneur’s attention on a daily basis. It takes an entrepreneurial mind to identify “deep” and quality purposes and deploy resources (time, efforts, skills, etc) – turning realities into business opportunities. Entrepreneurs must also learn to identify real societal problems and think of ways to mitigate them in the most innovative ways, proffering necessary solutions to critical and grand challenges as well as creating value to meet people’s needs. Entrepreneurship is the passion to create value and the capacity to follow through to see that such value is commercialised for both impact and profit. In creating value, purpose supersedes passion and necessity scores higher than creativity. An idea may look creative but may not be lucrative. Permit me to use the word “lucreativity” to describe an idea that is both creative and lucrative. Productivity is the function of necessity and creativity.
Read every day and discover
I recall that someone once told me that research means to read and search. Many people read but do not study. To study means to dedicate quality time and attention to discover new things. Discovering new things can be very exciting. Productivity is not only about the events that take place in the value chain; it is also about the chain of values that makes life eventful and beautiful. Knowledge is the driver of perpetual productivity. It takes paying attention to details to be equipped with relevant and useful information which leads to the “entrepreneurship of necessity”. Entrepreneurs may be generalists in theory (reading); they must be specialists in practice (research). Specialized knowledge and discovery come through training/education and reading/dedication respectively. To study means to devote time and attention to gaining knowledge by means of books.
Organize resources
Entrepreneurship is the link between creativity and productivity or necessity and opportunity. It is the ability to organize and harmonise resources to seize or exploit an opportunity. Organising is the process of blending human and material resources through a formal structure of tasks and authority, arranging work, dividing tasks among employees, and coordinating them to ensure the implementation of plans and accomplishment of objectives. It takes a visionary and knowledgeable entrepreneur to bring the right resources together (human and non-human) to create something of value.
Deploy resources
Having identified the most important purpose,it is, therefore, wise to dedicate resources by devoting time or effort in accomplishing a particular task or purpose. If purpose is not deep, do not deploy resources. For every objective, there is an obstacle. It is important to thoroughly evaluate the objectives of a course before implementation.
Utilize opportunities
“POOR” means Passing Over Opportunities Repeatedly. The ability to see and seize opportunities in every situation is one of the attributes of an entrepreneur. You cannot take advantage of an opportunity if you don’t recognise it as leverage. Being poor is not about what you don’t have; it is about what you have but don’t know its purpose. There are benefits everywhere and in every person. So, look critically and find purpose within your network or at workplace, and utilise the opportunities. Everyone has something to offer. If we are humble and patient, we will derive benefits from people daily. Benefits may come in form of a piece of vital information or advice, a business idea, useful knowledge, counsel, instruction, etc. Look for contents online regularly and listen to radio programmes daily. Do it intentionally; don’t succeed accidentally. Be deliberate – liberate yourself!
Create something of value
To whom much is given, much is required or expected. The essence of knowledge is to use it to create value. It takes an entrepreneurial mind to create or innovate. The responsibility of higher institutions of learning should not just be to produce employable graduates, but to produce graduates who will become producers in their own right. The best use of creativity is to deploy it to solve societal problems and create opportunities.
Trade with your talents
It is often said that one should do something for free before charging a fee. While this is good practice, it is important to package and market yourself. Demand means ‘WAR’ – willingness, ability and readiness. Productivity is about demand and supply, value, utility and quality. It is important to make profit as much as we strive to make impact. Your talents when utilised effectively will bring blessings to you and the people around you, and will engineer a productive economy.
Invest in people
Someone once told me that there are three things an entrepreneur needs to succeed:
Volunteer always
Volunteer, don’t “voluntear” (mar or ruin). When we make ourselves available to serve others, we are fulfilled doing so. SERVE means:
Solve problems, Empower others, Recruit leaders, Volunteer always and Expect rewards.
Entertain yourself
Reward yourself for every goal you set and accomplished. It is not easy to be productive. It takes purposefulness, diligence, focus, doggedness and intentionality to be an achiever. It is therefore necessary to make out quality time to relax. Indulge yourself; go for sightseeing, watch good movies, order your favourite meal and invest in good looks.
