An Ibadan-based property merchant, Alhaji Sufianu Kazeem, popularly known as Su-Kazeem, has called on the federal government to implement measures to alleviate the hardship faced by Nigerians due to the removal of petrol subsidy.
He made this statement in a press release issued in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, on Wednesday.
Kazeem emphasized that for Nigeria to find relief, the government should establish a workable mass public transport system to facilitate easy movement across the country. He supported the House of Representatives recommendation to purchase natural gas-powered buses to mitigate the increase in transport fares.
“The federal government, after removing the petrol subsidy, should urgently implement a meaningful and result-oriented mass public transportation system, which should include various grades of buses and trains as seen in developed and developing countries,” Kazeem stated.
He urged the government to design measures and palliatives to cushion the effects of the subsidy removal by providing and procuring Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses as an alternative transport system with cheaper fuel consumption.
He also called for the introduction of intermodal, regional, and national transport systems to facilitate the mass movement of people across the country.
Additionally, Kazeem called on the federal government to urgently collaborate with the National Assembly to identify critical areas of economic development where the additional revenue from the subsidy removal would be appropriately utilized.
Regarding the planned allocation of seventy billion naira to the National Assembly, Kazeem expressed his discontent, describing it as anti-Nigerian and contemptuous.
He criticised the lawmakers for being insensitive to the struggling economy and called for a reduction in their salaries and allowances to demonstrate commitment and service to the nation.
He further called on state governors and local government chairmen to follow suit and for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to appeal to them to reduce their salaries as well.
He emphasized the need for credibility and integrity among Nigeria’s leaders and urged them to reflect on the economic situation of the nation.
Kazeem also urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to import commodities in large numbers to reduce inflation in the country, which would alleviate hunger and ease tension.
Regarding the recent tuition fee hikes in schools, Kazeem called on the federal government to review the fees and cap them at sixty per cent, considering the economic situation in the country.
He warned the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) not to be a distraction to the federal government and urged them not to be used as a tool for opposition political parties.
Despite mixed reactions to the policy by Nigerians, Alhaji Sufianu Kazeem has backed President Tinubu on the policy and pleaded with Nigerians to exercise patience with the government.
