Safe School Initiative: NSCDC set to train 10,000 principals

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has concluded arrangements for the training of 10,000
school principals in Nigeria on personal security and school protection.

Commandant-General of NSCDC, Dr Abubakar Audi, who made this known, said the 10,000 have been selected to benefit from the free training aimed at improving the security of schools and host communities in the face of the emerging security challenges in the country.

Public Relations Officer of the Corps, Babawale Afolabi, said in a statement on Monday in Abuja that the CG was represented by the Commander, National Safe School Response Coordination Centre, Commandant Hammed Abodunrin.

While addressing the participants at the annual conference of the All Nigerian Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools ( ANCOPSS), Audi said all modalities have been put in place to enhance the programme, noting that all hands must be on the deck to address the security challenges in the nation’s schools.

He explained that when the heads of schools are trained on their own personal security, they would have enough confidence to respond to threats in their various places of work.

“This training will be conducted free of charge. The only responsibility of ANCOPSS will be to make their members available and provide venues, which could either be their secretariat or the school’s auditorium.

“Since it is practically impossible to bring 10,000 participants together at a time, any state that is ready should just invite the centre and give dates for the training,” he said

The training he further noted would include building the capacity of the beneficiaries in personal security skills, hostile environments, awareness training, basic child protection skills, information management, emergency response and first aid applications, among others.

While urging ANCOPSS to key into the opportunity, Audi disclosed that the training would be a train-the-trainers pattern so that the principals could go back to train other teachers in their respective schools.
