Rotary club of Ibadan donates to correctional centre

The Rotary Club of Ibadan has donated burglarproofing to the Agodi Correctional Centre in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State.

The donation was made on Monday by the club to the correctional centre’s clinic, where a mental health talk was also held for the inmates of the correctional centre.

Speaking, the President of the club, Rotarian Kolawole Shittu Adebisi said the club donated the burglarproof to the correctional center’s clinic in other to give officials of the correctional center clinic more security while on duty.

He noted that the club also held a mental health talk for the inmates to help them cope with depression after being discharged from the centre.

He said, “Our project today is in line with one of the areas of focus of Rotary International: peace and conflict resolution and prevention.

Our topic is ‘Combating Post-Discharge Depression and Social Stigma.’

“We are here to donate and have a mental health talk with the inmates on how to combat post-discharge depression and social depression.

As we all know, inmates face a lot of challenges when they are discharged, and we don’t want anything that would lead them back to the correctional centre.

“We want the inmates to feel the presence of the outside world and to understand that life does not end here.

The talk is important to reduce depression among inmates after they are discharged, as we don’t want them to return after their discharge.”

The mental health talk was delivered by motivational speaker John Asiegbu, who advised the inmates on the necessary steps to take after getting amnesty from the correctional centre.

He urged the inmates to turn over a new leaf after their discharge.

The event also witnessed visits to various places in the correctional centre, including the correctional centre school and the Vocational Skills Centre.

Also speaking, Past Assistant Governor of the club, Rotarian Isaac Ajibike, explained that the visits to the school are important to understand the needs of the correctional centre school.

Ajibike hinted that the club would renovate the correctional centre school to encourage formal education among the inmates.

He stated that the visit would be a continuous project, and they would consider plans to address other welfare needs for the inmates.
