REA MD inspects 200KW solar hybrid mini-grid project in Niger community

The Managing Director (MD) of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), Engr. Ahmad Salihijo inspected a 200-kilowatt peak solar hybrid mini-grid project in Danchitagi Community, Lavun LGA, Niger State over the weekend.

The project, developed by PowerGen with 450kWh Li-ion batteries, is fully operational and currently serves over 700 users in the community.

After inspecting the project, the MD expressed that it was deployed under the Performance-Based Grant (PBG) program of the Solar Hybrid Mini Grid component of the Nigeria Electrification Project, funded by the World Bank.

The purpose of the visit was to assess the project’s impact on beneficiary communities and ensure compliance with the approved technical standards set by the Agency.

Engr. Salihijo mentioned that over 80 similar mini-grids have been deployed across the country through the NEP-PBG initiative to promote equitable access to electricity.

He reassured that the Agency will continue to accelerate the deployment of impactful energy access projects while maintaining standardized implementation.

Salihijo emphasized the significance of prioritizing people in energy access programs and initiatives, stating, “REA’s mini-grids continue to stimulate productive use of energy, driving socioeconomic development.”

He also highlighted the cost-saving benefits of renewable energy, particularly after the recent removal of fuel subsidies. Beneficiaries can now rely on clean energy to power their homes and businesses, avoiding the more expensive alternatives of petrol and diesel generators.
