Protesters in Osun demand Buhari’s resignation over hike in electricity, pump price of petrol

Protesters under the banner of Osun Civil Society Coalition and Joint Action Front (JAF) on Wednesday stormed the streets of Osogbo, Osun State, demanding for the resignation of President Muhammadu Buhari over his refusal to reverse the hike of electricity tariff and pump price of petrol.

Findings by Tribune Online indicated that the protesters had converged on the popular Nelson Mandela Freedom Park, Old Garage area around 8:15 am and commence the demonstration against the hike in electricity tariff and price of petrol.

It would be recalled that Wednesday’s protest will be the third time protesters, consisting of human right activists and students demonstrated to condemn the federal government’s decision over an increase in petrol pump price and electricity tariff.

The protesters moved through Oke-Fia junction, Alekuwodo, Ola-Iya Junction and rounded off the demonstration in front of the premises of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union Journalists (NUJ), Osun State chapter, located at Fagbewesa, Osogbo.

Displaying placards, bearing various inscriptions, the protesters chanted solidarity songs to denounce the action of the federal government and also demanded the immediate resignation of President Muhammadu Buhari.

The inscriptions on the placards and banner read thus “Nationalise the oil sector under workers democratic control’, ‘no to fuel, electricity tariff, ‘Buhari govt anti-masses, among others.

Speaking to journalists, one of the leaders of the protesters, who is also the convener of Dialogue 360, Comrade Waheed Saka, said, “Nigerians have never had it so bad like we are under the current administration. We are here to protest against the hike in price which has affected businesses.”

Another human right activist and lawyer, Comrade Alfred Adegoke contended that “we are on the streets today to call for the resignation of President Muhammadu Buhari for his refusal to revert the electricity tariff and petrol price.”
