A few years ago, it was in the news that Medical Doctors cannot treat gun shot wounds without a Police permit. I want to know the current position as a guide in my current fledgling medical practice.

It is true that until a few years ago, hospitals in Nigeria were asked to demand for police report before they would admit and treat gunshot victims. In order to stop this act which has caused a lot of untimely deaths, The Compulsory Treatment and Care for Victims of Gunshot Act, 2017, came into effect in 2018. The Act mandates all medical facilities to receive and accept victims of gunshot for immediate treatment without a police report. The Act also stipulated penalties for violations under the Act for the hospital, Police and the victim of gunshot wounds.
