Over 40 feared dead in Yobe road accident

No fewer than 40 travellers are feared dead after three vehicles were involved in a ghastly motor accident due to a collision along Potiskum/Nangere Road in Yobe State.

An eyewitness told newsmen on Wednesday that a trailer, which was conveying traders to the popular cattle market in Potiskum, caused the accident.

Narrating the accident, a source disclosed that the trailer attempted to overtake a bus but failed to do so, resulting in a collision with the moving bus that lost control and hit a truck coming from the opposite direction.

“We counted 40 dead bodies, while over 30 people sustained serious injuries,” sources disclosed.

Those who survived were quickly taken to the Specialist General Hospital in Sabon Gari, Nangere.

As of the time of filing this report, there has been no reaction from the police or the Federal Road Safety Corps.

The accident occurred in Nangere, a local government area in the state.

Sources and eyewitnesses told our correspondent that the accident happened today when a trailer loaded with cattle from Buduwa Village, a few kilometres from the local government, rammed into another vehicle.

‘The trailer was overspeeding and lost control, hitting another car, a Canter model, and crushing over 20 people while injuring many,’ a source, Mallam Barde, said.

Another source mentioned that the trailer also crushed victims who had fallen from the car, leading to an unidentified number of deaths and many sustaining varying degrees of injury.

However, the development was also reported on Facebook by a user, Muhammad Bala Sale, who confirmed the number of dead bodies to have reached 50 at the time of the press.
