Ooni’s wife calls for synergy among Adire textile producers in South-West

Queen Aderonke Ademiluyi Ogunwusi, wife of Ooni of Ife, Oba I Ogunwusi (Ojaja 11), has reiterated the need for a lasting collaboration among producers of Adire indigenous textile across the South-West region.

Olori Ogunwusi highlighted this during a special visit to the Chairman of the National Union of Textile Garment Tailoring Workers of Nigeria (NUTGTWN), Kampala Sector, Comrade Ibrahim Lawal, at the Union Secretariat in Itire-Ikate, Lagos.

The Queen, who is also the Creative Director of Adire Textile Hub in Ife, expressed her interest in establishing a unifying template that would showcase the beauty of Yoruba indigenous textile materials and products, enabling them to compete effectively in the global market.

Additionally, Olori Ogunwusi disclosed plans for an exhibition of the popular Adire Indigenous Textile Exhibition in Ile Ife, Osun State, scheduled for September. She expressed satisfaction with the efforts of the Lagos State chapter of the Union for promoting indigenous Textiles and using their products to project the cultural identity of the Yoruba.

“I am very happy to be here, and it is my belief that the leadership of the Union’s Kampala sector in Lagos is ready to cooperate and partner with us as we unveil the popular Adire Indigenous Textile Exhibition in Ile Ife, Osun State, in September this year,” she said.

The Exhibition is part of the programme scheduled for the 2023 edition of the Olojo Festival, which will take place between the 22nd and 23rd of September in Ile-Ife and will serve as the gathering point for over 50 exhibitors from across the South-West region.

Executive Chairman, Itire Ikate Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Hon. Hammed Olanrewaju Apatira, also hosted Olori Ogunwusi at the Council Secretariat.

Apatira commended the Itire-Ikate artisans, under the leadership of Comrade Lawal, for their efforts in transforming the Union, assuring continued support from the Council in driving the noble idea of promoting the sector.

He further assured that the Council, under his leadership, was committed to creating a viable business environment for growth and development.

“It is our intention to make the Union’s production site one of the best in Africa. We have a textile production hub across Africa, and we are determined to ensure that the Kampala Sector of the Lagos State National Union of Textile Garment Tailoring Workers of Nigeria competes with other countries, such as what is obtainable in Gambia, Senegal, Mali, and other African countries that are also partners in indigenous Textile products,” the council boss stated.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Kampala sector of the Union, who is also the Project Manager and co-organizer of the Adire Indigenous Textile Exhibition, Comrade Lawal, expressed his appreciation to Olori Ogunwusi for the special visit.

The NUTGTWN boss, Lagos chapter, added that the sector was ready to partner with Olori Ogunwusi in her efforts to transform the laudable project.

“I am honoured to host Olori Aderonke Ademiluyi Ogunwusi, wife of the foremost Yoruba monarch.

“Our job as the National Union of Textile Garment Tailoring Workers of Nigeria (NUTGTWN) Kampala Sector is to promote indigenous Textiles, and we will not relent in creating the market for our products,” he said.

“The chairman of Itire-Ikate Local Council Development Area (LCDA) has been supporting our dreams for years. He has been the pillar of support for our sector, and we have been able to project our works through his support since I became the chairman of the union in Lagos State,” he added.
