Puberty changes occur when the body starts making sex hormones. These changes which include breast development normally begins to appear in girls between ages 8 to 14 years old. With delayed puberty, these changes either don’t occur, or if they do, they don’t progress normally. Breast development in girls is considered delayed when breasts don’t develop by age 13. The commonest cause of the delay is that it runs in families. Another common cause of delayed puberty in girls is lack of body fat. Being too thin can disrupt the normal process of puberty.
Delayed puberty also may occur when the ovaries produce too little or no hormones as well in some other underlying medical conditions.
It is for these reasons that it will be a good idea for your daughter to see a specialist doctor for proper medical investigation and management.
