National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Kwara State says it arrested 109 suspected drug traffickers between January and April 2021 in various parts of the state.
Speaking at a workshop on the “Effects of Drug Abuse and Trafficking on Security, Social and Economic Growth of Kwara State” organised by the agency in collaboration with Top Ranking Multiresources Limited in Ilorin on Wednesday, the state commandant of the NDLEA, Mr Ambrose Umoru, said that the state has the highest prevalence rate of 13.0 per cent among states in the North Central.
The NDLEA boss, who said that the agency seized 48 grammes of cocaine during the period under review, added that the agency also seized a total of 331.261 kilogrammes of assorted drugs and five grammes of swinol from the suspects.
Umoru said the command recorded two convictions while 32 cases are pending in courts, adding that 46 of the suspects arrested during raid operations who are drug users had been counselled and released.
The NDLEA boss also said that illicit and abuse of drugs had increased the crime rate in the society, adding that the increase in banditry, kidnapping, armed robbery, rape and other violent crimes are being perpetrated as a result of illicit drug use.
The commandant said that the NDLEA would continue to raid market places, motor parks and chemist shops to seize the illicit drug.
