In line with inflationary trends in Nigeria, selected food prices in April 2021 have shown that the average prices of Agricultural products have been on a constant rise in the last one year.
On a month-on-month basis, the food sub-index of Nigeria’s Consumer Price Index increased by 0.99 per cent in April 2021, down by 0.91 per cent points from 1.9 per cent recorded in March 2021.
This is even as three states in Nigeria have been adjudged costliest in terms of intercity bus journey, data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has shown.
They are; Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja with N4,594.21 average fare, Lagos (N3,500.20) and Sokoto (N3,340.30).
In its selected food price watch data for April 2021 released on Thursday, the NBS observed that the average price of 1 dozen Agric eggs medium size increased year-on-year by 11.26 per cent and month-on-month by 1.13 per cent to N530.40 in April 2021 from N524.47 in March 2021 while the average price of a piece of Agric eggs medium size (the price of one) increased year-on-year by 18.32 per cent and month-on-month by 1.47 per cent to N49.14 in April 2021 from N48.43 in March 2021.
According to the NBS, the average price of 1kg of rice (imported high quality sold loose) increased year-on-year by 14.57 per cent and decreased month-on-month by -0.67 per cent to N540.58 in April 2021 from N544.21 in March 2021.
It also noted that the average price of 1kilogram (kg) of tomato increased year-on-year by 0.09 per cent and month-on-month by 3.67 per cent to N277.26 in April 2021 from N267.45 in March 2021.
Similarly, the average price of 1kg of yam tuber increased year-on-year by 9.87 per cent and month on month by 3.26 per cent to N252.80 in April 2021 from N244.82 in March 2021, the NBS stated.
In the same vein, the NBS released the transport fare watch report for April 2021 which covers the following categories: bus journey within the city per drop constant route; bus journey intercity, state route, a charge per person; airfare charge for specified routes single journey; journey by motorcycle (Okada) per drop; and waterway passenger transport.
It observed that the average fare paid by commuters for bus journey within the city increased by 2.34 per cent month-on-month and by 72.59 per cent year-on-year to N386.10 in April 2021 from N377.27 in March 2021.
“States with highest bus journey fare within city were Zamfara (N620.35), Bauchi (N600.35) and Nasarawa (N500.23) while States with lowest bus journey fare within city were Oyo (N200.07), Abia (N215.04) and Borno (N263.45).
“Average fare paid by commuters for bus journey intercity increased by 1.48per cent month-on-month and by 37.50 per cent year-on-year to N2,446.86 in April 2021 from N2,411.29 in March 2021.
“States with highest bus journey fare intercity were Abuja FCT (N4,594.21), Lagos (N3,500.20) and Sokoto (N3,340.30) while States with lowest bus journey fare within city were Bayelsa (N1,764.55), Bauchi (N1,782.12) and Enugu (N1,800.40),” the NBS data deflected.
It further stated that the average fare paid by air passengers for specified routes single journey decreased by -0.24 per cent month-on-month and increased by 18.43 per cent year-on-year to N36,409.46 in April 2021 from N36,495.41 in March 2021.
States with the highest airfare were Anambra (N38,650.00), Bauchi (N38,550.00), Lagos (N38,400.00) while the States with the lowest airfare were Akwa-Ibom (N32,750.00), Sokoto (N33,500.00), and Enugu (N35,200.00).
Also, the average fare paid by commuters for journey by motorcycle per drop increased by 1.79per cent month-on-month and by 86.41per cent year-on-year to N276.30 in April 2021 from N271.44 in March 2021. States with the highest journey fare by motorcycle per drop were Yobe (N455.02), Lagos (N435.21) and Taraba (N430.55) while states with the lowest journey fare by motorcycle per drop were Adamawa (N95.10), Katsina (N155.04) and Niger (N160.20).
The average fare paid by passengers for waterway passenger transport increased by 1.47per cent month-on-month and by 35.22per cent year-on-year to N820.23 in April 2021 from N808.38 in March 2021.
States with the highest fare according to NBS by waterway passenger transport were Delta (N2,400.00), Bayelsa (N2,358.60) and Rivers (N2,300.00) while states with the lowest fare by waterway passenger transport were Borno (N260.14), Gombe (N315.60) and Kebbi (N350.65).
