Makinde mandates Amotekun operatives to rid Oyo forests of kidnappers, bandits

Published by

In tackling kidnapping, banditry and its other security challenges, Oyo State governor, Mr Seyi Makinde, has directed the deployment of additional 200 members of the state’s Amotekun corps to Ibarapa and Oke-Ogun areas of the state.

The deployed corps members have a mission to rid the forests and communities in Ibarapa and Oke-Ogun of criminals.
Makinde who conveyed this directive via a Facebook post, on Wednesday, added that the deployed operatives will give him daily and then periodic reports of their activities.

He added that Amotekun corps had been directed to collaborate with the regular security agencies and vigilante groups to enforce the state’s Open Rearing and Grazing Regulation Law, 2019, created to regulate the activities of herdsmen in Oyo State.

Decrying that farmers overtime had either been killed and/or lost their livelihoods to criminal trespass and damage by herdsmen, Makinde said the state was considering the possibility of paying compensation to families of victims or victims who can prove their claims.

He, however, assured that the state had begun the process of prosecuting all persons linked to criminalities in Ibarapa and the Oke-Ogun.

However, Makinde said the state will, in the next few weeks, hold town hall meetings and community outreaches to interact with residents and security agencies on ways to more effectively to tackle insecurity in the state.

Also, Makinde reiterated the resolve of the state government to commence documentation of foreigners, especially those working in mines.

Such documentation, Makinde noted, will ensure that only foreigners who have legitimate interests remain within the state.

The Oyo governor also assured of continued support of the current administration for the police and other federal security agencies working in the state.
