LASU lecturers, other workers mourn as university professor dies in car crash

A Professor of Mass Communication at the Lagos State University (LASU) Ojo, Olayiwola Oso, 67, is dead.

He died in an auto crash on Saturday night when he was returning to Abeokuta, Ogun State, from Delta State University, Abraka, where he had gone to supervise the thesis of a PhD student.

The Dean, Faculty of Communication and Media Studies of LASU, Prof Sunday Olayinka Alawode, announced his passage on the faculty WhatsApp platform on Sunday.

According to him, it’s a rude shock that we lost Prof Muraino Olayiwola Oso to a car accident on Saturday even as we commiserate with Mummy Oso, the children and his entire family, the Communication family worldwide, LASU Community and all others.

He added, “Baba, your sudden exit is painful but we rest in the comfort that you have gone to be with the Lord.Adieu Baba of the Communication family.”

Reacting to the sudden death, the dean of the Faculty of Science, Prof Shehu Akintola, told Nigerian Tribune that he found it difficult to believe the news when he was informed by another colleague in the system.

He said, “My brain crashed immediately when I was told about his demise.

“Prof Oso was like a father to me and he also provided mentorship remotely for me.

“He was a simple man and difficult to fault. You would never see him fighting anybody. In fact, he was very humble and gentle.

“We served together in the LASU Press Committee during the administration of Prof Olanrewaju Fagbohun as the Vice-Chancellor of the school.

“Baba Oso as we used to call him was our chairman of that committee. He was a very busy man even after his deanship tenure. He was always engaging. He was also a counsellor to many of us.

“Even one of Baba’s daughters is with us in our faculty. She is a Lecturer 2 Officer. We have spoken this afternoon and she told me that Baba was coming to Abeokuta to meet his family and was already around Ijebu-Ode when he had an accident.

“His death is a painful and great loss not only to his family members but to all of us in LASU.

“We will greatly miss him and his counsel.”

Also expressing shock, the immediate past chairman of the Senior Staff Association of LASU, Prince Saheed Oseni, who is now Zonal Secretary of the group, said the university community would greatly miss the renowned scholar.

He also described the late professor as a gentle and loving person, who was always ready to offer people help.

He said Prof Oso had committed so much to the development of communication and media studies in the university and his demise would certainly create a big vacuum in the faculty.

The late Don had his first degree in Mass Communication at the University of Lagos, Akoka, and a Master’s degree in International Relations at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile- Ife.

He had once worked as a reporter on both radio and the News Agency of Nigeria and also served for four years from 2011 as the Dean of the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies of LASU.

He belonged to many professional bodies including the Association of Communication Scholars & Professionals of Nigeria which he served as a president.

His body has been deposited in a mortuary.
