Insecurity: Sen Nwoko calls for national dialogue

Published by

The senator representing Delta North in the upper chamber of the national assembly, Senator Ned Munir Nwoko, has advocated for a national conversation in view of the senseless and heartbreaking killings in parts of the country.

Reacting to the Christmas day killings of over 100 people in Bokkos and Mangu local government areas of Plateau State and the spate of killings in Katsina and other parts of the country, the lawmaker said the military approach hasn’t brought the lasting peace Nigerians desperately need.

In a statement on Tuesday, the senator said, “I strongly feel that it’s time to bring together all relevant groups for a national conversation—a dialogue where all voices are heard and solutions are sought collectively.

“For too long, we’ve relied solely on military strategies, and it’s painfully clear that this approach hasn’t brought the lasting peace we desperately need.

” I truly believe that dialogue is an untapped path that deserves exploration.

“I’ve consistently stressed the urgent necessity for a national dialogue involving separatist groups in Nigeria.

“It’s a pivotal motion on my list. Through extensive research, I’ve gathered compelling evidence that in instances where military intervention fell short, peace conversations have been effective in resolving conflicts amicably.

“If the British government could dialogue with the Irish Republican Army (IRA) and the Americans could dialogue with the Taliban, bringing age-old and costly conflicts to an end, surely we can do the same in Nigeria to stop the killing fields and redirect the huge expenditure towards other pressing national issues.

“I earnestly hope that when this motion for a national conference is proposed, the majority of lawmakers will throw their weight behind this crucial initiative.

According to him, the nation’s security situation is hampering growth and stability, adding that recent events served as a stark reminder that Nigerians can’t afford to sit idle.

He expressed his deepest condolences to the families and communities affected.

“My heart aches, and at the same time, it yearns for a Nigeria where we wouldn’t be awakened by such rude and devastating news.

These absurd acts of violence are beyond comprehension and should never be tolerated.
