Independence anniversary holiday, looming strike to keep bank branches closed

Deposit Money Banks (DMBs) in Nigeria have sent out messages to their customers informing them of branch closures today, in line with the Federal Government’s declaration of public holiday.

In commemoration of Nigeria’s 63rd Independence Day anniversary, the Federal Government has declared today, as a public holiday.

Specifically, the banks have enjoined the banking public to use digital channels to carry out their transactions.

Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the declaration in Abuja on behalf of the Federal Government on Thursday.

However, there are fears that  bank employees are set to join the industrial action being called by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) executive committees.

The National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions Employees (NUBIFIE) are expected to join their Labour counterparts to draw the attention of the Federal Government to the punishing economic situation in the country.

The organised labour, comprising the NLC and the TUC, on Friday, boycotted an emergency meeting with the Federal Government scheduled for 3.00p.m at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The Federal Government had called an emergency meeting with the leaders of the organised labour at the Conference Room of the Office of the President’s Chief of Staff.

Meanwhile, the labour unions, at the time of going to press, are meeting with the representatives of the Federal Government, led by the Chief of Staff to the President, Honourable Femi Gbajabiamila, at the Presidential Villa.
