Self-taught painter and artist, Joel Onoriode Akpojivi, popularly known as Daddy K, has revealed that his journey and success in his vocation were inspired by his late dad.
Speaking with R, the artist disclosed that he started painting as a kid in a way to contain his anger.
“My passion for art was inspired by my late dad when I was two years old, and whenever I was sad or angry or chastised for erring or not doing something right, I would go into my room and draw or sketch.
“Art was my go-to place for solace and solitude. Back then it was just an outlet to relate and channel my annoyance positively. I never thought it would be a career path for me. When I got to secondary school, my friends and fellow students would beg me to draw/paint their portraits or design cards or paintings for them.
After school, Daddy K disclosed that he decided to turn his passion into a career and became a professional in 2008.
With specialisations in mix media painting and pencil drawings with a combination of hue, texture and symbolism, Akpojivi now plies his trade in Dubai and has become a member of Art Smiley gallery, Dubai.
One of his paintings which gained acclaim was ‘Bleeding nation’ and art enthusiasts have recognised the uniqueness of Akpojivi’s art, raw emotions, mix media, detailing and assemblage of colours.
Further speaking with R, the award-winning businessman and philanthropist who is also the founder of Finishing Glance, among other companies, disclosed that his ambition has always been to use artwork to draw attention to Africa, not only for all it lacks but also for its potential and resources.
