Ghana beats Nigeria, others in 2020 May/June WASSCE, sweeps council’s International Excellence Awards

Three students, all from Ghanaian schools, have emerged overall best, first and second runner-up candidates in the 2020 May/June West African Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE), beating their counterparts from Nigeria, Gambia, Sierra Leone and Liberia.

They are Master Cecil Tetteh Kumah (1st Prize), Master Godfred Aseda Obeng (2nd Prize) and Miss Afua Manukure Ansah (3rd Prize). That was the examination which has its time table shifted twice last year because of COVID-19 pandemic.

The trio, however, were unveiled and rewarded for their outstanding performances with WAEC International Excellence Awards at the just concluded 69th annual council meeting of the organisation in Accra, Ghana.

A total of 2,122,844 candidates from across the five-member countries sat for the examination, in which Nigeria presented more than 68 per cent of the figure.

The Head of Public Affairs, WAEC International, Accra, Mr Biodun Aduloju, made the disclosure in a press release to newsmen in Nigeria, on Wednesday evening.

He noted that even the Augustus Bandele Oyediran Award for the overall best candidate in the examination also went to a Ghanaian, Cecil Tetteh Kumah.

Aduloju, a Nigerian, did not give further details as to the value of the award prizes won by each of the three winners.

However, Nigerian students won the overall prize of the last two years edition of the award while students from Ghana won the second and third position in both editions.

Aduloju who disclosed that the Ghanaian President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, declared the five-day 69th meeting open, noted that the council had also elected a new chairman to run the affairs of the organisation for the next three years.

The new chairman according to him is Prof. Ato Essuman from Ghana, succeeding Mr Baboucarr Bouy from The Gambia, whose tenure expired in March this year.

He said delegates who attended the meeting included government nominees and representatives of the ministries of education, universities, secondary schools and other interest groups from WEAC member countries.
