Kano State governor, Dr Abduallai Umar Ganduje, has been charged to adopt war-time strategies among other measures to check the increasing deaths of residents in the state over the dreaded COVID-19 pandemic.
A group, the Murtala Muhammed Foundation (MMF), made the call in an open letter to the governor, declaring that the situation in the state deserved a strong leadership action.
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Foundation, Mrs Aisha Oyebode-Muhammed, while urging the governor to declare a State of Emergency in the state and ensure that he works with the Nigerian security forces to enforce this, lamented that Kano already had considerable developmental challenges that threatened to be compounded by the pandemic.
According to the Foundation CEO, who is the eldest child of former Head of State, late General Murtala Muhammed, the challenges include a huge population, endemic poverty and high rates of illiteracy amongst other indicators, saying these had made the state extremely vulnerable, declaring that all these portend horrendous catastrophe for the people should the state lose the war against COVID-19.
