Fish production: NALDA targets 2000 farmers, 40 processors in Borno

THE National Agricultural Land Development Authority (NALDA) said it will engage 2000 fish farmers and 40 fish processors to execute a fish value chain project. The Executive Secretary of NALDA, Prince Paul Ikonne disclosed  this during his recent visit to the Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Zulum. Addressing journalists at the Borno government house, Ikonne said a complete fish value chains project would be executed in Borno state targetting 2000  fish farmers/ producers and 40 fish processors. He stated that the fish value chain was going to be in cluster form among the three senatorial districts. He, however, stressed that the project was socio agribusiness with inbuilt sustainability.

The NALDA Chief Executive Officer also promised that the activities would commence this month and or in February.  He explained that NALDA was out to execute President Muhammadu Buhari’s directive to go out and retrieve NALDA’s properties, especially the agricultural lands to facilitate NALDA’s mandates. Responding, the Governor of  Borno State,  Professor Zulum expressed the Borno state readiness to work with NALDA and to specifically commence the fish project immediately.

He promised to put a committee in place to work with NALDA and instruct them to work carefully to identify the beneficiaries as the key driver. He announced that the 40 number fish cluster farms would be distributed among the three senatorial districts: North, Central and south in the ratio of 13-14-13 respectively. He reiterated the Borno state governments commitment to work closely with NALDA to address the food (protein) supply challenges, unemployment and security.
