FG orders investigation into immigration fire incident

Published by

The Federal Government has ordered an investigation into the cause of the fire that engulfed the Headquarters of Nigeria Immigration Service, Abuja on Sunday.

This came as Government has disclosed that the NIS data management centre, especially the Migration Information and Data Analysis System (MIDAS) was affected by the inferno.

Director, Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Interior, Mr Mohammed Manga, while giving an update on the fire incident, on Monday, in Abuja, however, said no life was lost and that no one was injured.

“Fire broke out in a part of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) Headquarters on Sunday morning.

“It was put out by the Nigeria Fire Service stationed at the premise, assisted by the fire units of the neighbouring agencies before it could do much damage,” Manga said.

According to him, the fire incident affected the data management centre, especially the Migration Information and Data Analysis System, which enabled the agency to coordinate the movement of persons at the borders and upload information on missing and stolen passports to INTERPOL database.

He, however, said no data was lost as a result of the incident and this would not affect the operation of the agency whatsoever since each border post is also independently connected to INTERPOL.

He said the incident occurred at a time the data management centre is being transferred to a new ultramodern building, saying migration would now be accelerated seamlessly.

“NIS has in place an effective protection and security system for its data and operations facilities and will continue to offer quality services to Nigerians and foreigners alike in all areas of its mandate,” he said.
