EXPLAINER: Who takes over mantle of leadership after Akeredolu’s death?

There have been heated arguments on what happens if a sitting governor dies in office.

In recent development, Ondo Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu died at the age of 67 after a long illness.

Aketi as fondly called was elected Ondo Governor in 2016 and re-elected for a second term in 2020.

During his lifetime, the former NBA President was an ardent advocate for restructuring, as well as kicking against illegal mining and open grazing in the state and southern Nigeria.

What the Constitution says

TRIBUNE ONLINE reviews the 1999 Constitution as amended, which states what happens next, in case of the death of an elected governor.

According to Section 191(1) of the 1999 constitution, “The Deputy Governor of a State shall hold the office of Governor of the State if the office of Governor becomes vacant by reason of death, resignation, impeachment, permanent incapacity, or removal of the governor from office for any other reason in accordance with sections 188 or 189 of this constitution.”

Going by the above provision, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, the Acting Governor will be sworn in as the substantive governor of Ondo.
