The need for nursing and lactating mothers to be granted six months of maternity leave to enable them to go through exclusive breastfeeding has been stressed.
The reiteration was made by Civil Society Scaling Up Nutrition (CSSUN) and the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) in Gombe State.
The Gombe State CSSUN Coordinator, Mrs Comfort Amos Mukollo, along with some members of the coalition on scaling up nutrition, made the call while on an advocacy visit to the office of the Gombe State Head of Civil Service.
Comfort Mukollo lamented the prevalence of malnutrition among children in the state and stressed that fighting the situation requires the support of all stakeholders and sectors of the state.
She explained that the Coalition, which was formed in 2017, has been working towards ensuring that malnutrition is drastically reduced in the state.
She added that apart from the advocacy to relevant Ministries, Departments, and Agencies, they also carry out nutrition education at health facilities, household training for women groups, and food demonstrations on how to use readily available farm produce to prepare cheaper and healthier foods for their families.
The coordinator expressed the belief that the formulation of a policy for six months of paid maternity leave for nursing mothers would be of immense benefit to mothers and children, as well as contribute to building a healthier and more prosperous society.
Comfort Mukollo noted that the early months of a child’s life are pivotal for nurturing, bonding, and providing essential nutrition through breastfeeding, hence the need for the six-month maternity leave to allow mothers to exclusively breastfeed for the recommended six months.
She therefore solicited the support and consideration of the head of service in advocating for and implementing the policy, which conforms with global best practices.
