Equities market trades southward, dips by 0.5 per cent

Profit-taking on high capitalised stocks dips market marginally by 0.5 per cent, on Wednesday, as the All-Share Index declined to 25,215.04 points. Accordingly, the Month-to-Date return turned to negative at -0.2 per cent, while the Year-to-Date loss increased to -6.1 per cent.

Specifically, tickers such as Zenith Bank, UACN and BUA Cement plunged by 1.78 per cent, 9.09 per cent, and 3.94 per cent, respectively as investors booked profit.

Hence, the NSE Banking, NSE Consumer Goods and NSE Industrial indices tanked by 0.14 per cent, 0.27 per cent, and 2.54 per cent respectively. On the flip side, the NSE Insurance and NSE Oil/Gas Indices rose by 1.44 per cent and 0.20 per cent respectively.

Market sentiment, as measured by market breadth, was negative as 19 tickers declined, relative to 18 gainers. C&I Leasing (-9.4%) and UACN (-9.1%) were the top losers of the day, while Prestige Insurance (+10.0%) and Berger Paints (+10.0%) recorded the largest gains.

The total volume of trades decreased by 0.8 per cent to 266.65 million units, valued at N3.18 billion and exchanged in 3,978 deals. Guaranty Trust Bank was the most traded stock by volume and value at 69.41 million units and N1.68 billion, respectively.
