The Kano Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has apprehended 81 suspects, with 68 of them being convicted for various financial crimes in Kano, Jigawa, and Katsina states between January and July this year.
The Kano Zonal Commander, Farouk Dogondaji, disclosed this on Tuesday while addressing the leadership of the Kano state Correspondents’ Chapel, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), who paid him a courtesy call in his office.
“We have arrested 81 individuals for various financial crimes in the last seven months in the Zonal Command. Out of those arrested, 68 have been successfully convicted,” he said.
He further stated that the Commission is still handling ongoing cases and securing convictions within the zone.
Mr Dogondaji urged members of the public not to hesitate in providing useful information to enable the Commission to combat financial crimes in the zone.
The Commission has expanded its efforts beyond prosecution to include crime prevention, organising rallies, lectures, workshops, and seminars against financial crimes, particularly in primary and secondary schools, where school children are educated on leading an upright and financially crime-free life.
He also mentioned that the EFCC in the zone has concluded its investigation on suspects arrested during the 2023 general elections.
“They will soon be charged to court. Our lawyers are working with lawyers from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the ICPC for their prosecution,” he added.
Mr Dogondaji commended the leadership of the Kano Correspondents’ Chapel for their partnership and promised to maintain a growing relationship.
Speaking on the occasion, the chairman of Kano Correspondents’ Chapel, Alhaji Aminu Garko, praised the EFCC Zonal Commander and his management team for their warm reception.
He appealed to the EFCC headquarters to decentralise the release of information to journalists so that Zonal Commands would have the authority to provide necessary information to working journalists in their zones for easy dissemination.
