E-learning: We won’t compromise standards ― ASUU

As many public universities in the country have commenced academic activities, particularly via online after about 10 months industrial action, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has assured the students and school authorities as well as the public of giving their best of service that will not compromise quality.

President of ASUU, Professor ‘Biodun Ogunyemi, gave the assurance in an exclusive interview with Tribune Online.

He said now that ASUU members had returned to their duty posts, they would do their best to ensure the value of certificates that the students would be awarded at the end of their studies would never be degraded.

He said they had resolved to put in efforts to cover for the lost grounds to the strike and also uphold the standard and quality of education the students received.

According to him, ASUU agitations are always towards asking government at both federal and state levels to provide quality public university education in the country.

“So, we shall do our best to support our students to get value for their certificates,” he stressed.

ASUU boss said the new reality of e-learning with the deployment of technology is now done on everyone not only in Nigeria but also in other parts of the world and that this requires that lecturers adjust the teaching methods to accommodate both the online and physical methods.

He explained that though, online teaching and learning required special skills and tools for effective engagement, where the problem lies is mostly on the part of students as many of them may not have gadgets such as android phones and laptops, electricity supply and internet to use.

He said it was unfortunate that such category of students could not get support from the Nigerian government unlike what is obtainable in a developed clime.

“But all the same,” he stressed, “these problems would ease out along the line if governments will keep to their promise of the revitalisation of our public universities.”
