The caretaker chairman of Surulere North Local Council Development Area of Oyo State, Hon Sarafadeen Olatunji-Mohammed, has warned people not to politicise the issue of relief package sent by National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), adding that it is not an issue that should lead to controversy or trading of words.
Hon Olatunji-Mohammed further warned those he described as fifth columnists not to politicise the relief package with unfounded fallacy just to achieve their selfish objectives.
A release by signed by his media aide, Femi Babalola, explained that the chairman has been working with NEMA and SEMA for over eight years and has a cordial relationship of over eight years as a Disaster Manager and as such wants to put the record straight.
“The chairman was part of the team which includes SEMA and NEMA that developed community based contingency plan for Oyo State in 2014. The media war going on in Surulere Local Government over the glory given to a Federal Honourable representing Surulere and Ogo Oluwa Constituency is uncalled for.
“Hon Segun Odebunmi that is representing us at the Lower House in the National Assembly truly contacted NEMA, but the truth is that the chairman also submitted a letter to that effect when the heavy storm damaged several places in Gambari. He contacted both NEMA and OYSEMA when the unfortunate situation occurred on April 25 this year.
“After this, he was told by the Zonal Coordinator of NEMA to submit the request through OYSEMA and he submitted the request to the chairman of OYSEMA on April 28 through the Office of the Deputy Governor who is the chairman of the State Agency; there was a meeting with both NEMA Zonal Coordinator and Secretary of OYSEMA in which they both came for inspection afterwards.
“In fairness to Hon Odebunmi, throughout the process of getting the relief materials, there was this constant mentioning of his name by the Zonal Coordinator of NEMA that he is talking to his superior in Abuja,” the release said.
He however stated further that the letter sent by the Chairman of Surulere North LCDA to the Zonal Director of NEMA was what the agency used to facilitate the provision of the relief materials as it was what was sent to the supplier of the relief materials with the heading, ‘Emergency supply of relief materials in view of rainstorm disaster in Gambari and other communities in Surulere North LGA, Oyo State.’
“The Surulere North quoted in the letter shows evidence of using the chairman’s letter in the supply of the relief materials. I hereby urge all stakeholders involved to sheath their swords and allow both the Chairman and the Hon Odebunmi to focus on how to get the relief materials across to the victims affected by the rainstorm,” he concluded.
