COVID-19: Nigeria evacuees to pay for isolation centres, foreign affairs demands

Indication has emerged that Nigerians stranded in foreign lands and anxious to return home would have to pay for the cost of their isolation on their return.

The memo, “Need to pay for Quarantine, Isolation, accommodation centre or hotels before Departure and Arrival in Nigeria, ”  dated May 14, 2020, put the bill for prospective evacuees at N297, 600.

Nicholas Uhomoibhi gave the breakdown of the cost as N240,000 and N57, 000 for accommodation and feeding, respectively for the 14 days mandatory isolation as prescribed by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control.

The memo read in part: “I am directed to bring to your attention, that due to measures that are beyond the control of the COVID-19 local organising team in Nigeria, all evacuees going to Nigeria, henceforth are now to pay for their quarantine, isolation, accommodation centre or hotels before arrival in Nigeria.

“Kindly be informed that these rates were negotiated in Nigeria and that the Embassy has been instructed not to airlift any evacuees who fail to pay the above.

” Please, accept the assurances of the Ambassador.”
