Covid 19 and alcohol

Published by

I am a 60 -year- old Civil Servant who enjoys a few bottles of my favourite beer on a regular basis. Now I am told that alcohol increases the chance of somebody catching the COVID 19 infection. Kindly explain as I love my beer but at the same time, I don’t want to catch the Coronavirus.

According to the  World Health Organization (WHO),  it is possible that excessive alcohol consumption may increase the chance of developing severe illness as a result of COVID-19. In addition, other medical experts believe that alcohol can prevent immune cells from working properly. This reduces the ability of the immune system to fight off infections. It can also cause inflammation to occur, further weakening the immune system with life threatening results. In addition, during the COVID-19 pandemic, people may experience higher levels of stress, depression, and anxiety. This may cause some people to consume more alcohol than they usually would. With this, excessive alcohol use can lead to or worsen existing mental health problems.
