My Uncle recently died from the Covid-19 infection. As an influential man in the society, the family is planning an elaborate funeral for him. I am worried that the body may transmit the infection. Kindly educate me on this.

In its guidelines on the burial of victims of Covid-19, the World Health Organisation (WHO) states that except in cases of haemorrhagic fevers (such as Ebola, Marburg) and Cholera, dead bodies are generally not infectious. However, the organisation emphasised that health workers handling bodies of Covid-19 victims must wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) while the body should be disinfected and dressed with impermeable material. Furthermore, to ensure that bodily fluids do not leak, oral and nasal orifices of the dead body need to be plugged. The dead body must be placed in a leak-proof plastic body bag after decontamination. Therefore, what you should worry about is the need to have a very small attendance at the funeral. It is also very important for mourners to observe all Covid-19 regulations such as the use of face masks, social distancing and hand washing.
