Benue govt impounds 376 cows over open gazing

Benue State Government has impounded 376 cows for flouting the anti-open grazing law.

Deputy governor of the state, Engineer Benson Abounu, who disclosed this to newsmen in Makurdi, on Wednesday, said that the cows were arrested on January 23 and 26, 2021 at Kasima village in Guma local government area of the state.

Abounu said that six herdsmen have also been arrested and handed over to police.

The deputy governor, however, raised the alarm of massive deployment of cows into the state.

He noted that the State Security Council which dissected the statement credited to the Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, on the presence of Boko Haram at Benue/Nasarawa border discovered the influx of herdsmen on the River Benue in Agatu and Gwer West axis of the state.

The deputy governor said that the herdsmen are deadlier than normal herdsmen and fully armed with AK 47 riffles.

“While we are still investigating the declaration made by Nasarawa State Governor of the presence of Boko Haram at Benue/Nasarawa border when we noticed massive deployment of herdsmen on the brink of river Benue on the bank of Nasarawa State bank.

“We also observed that a good number of these people are heavily armed, many of them with AK 47 riffle as if this was not enough, we have been able to apprehend a good number of them in a village called Kasima in Guma local government.

“On January 23, 156 cows belonging to these herdsmen were apprehended and on the 26th, another 220 cows were apprehended from the same vicinity.

“It was observed that the herdsmen were not ordinary herdsmen because they were heavily armed,” Abounu said.
