The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) election material distribution centre in Okodi Town, Ogbia Local Government Area, Bayelsa State has been attacked and burnt down by yet-to-be-identified gunmen in the wee hours of Saturday.

According to eyewitness accounts, the voting materials meant for Ogbia ward 2, ward 4 and ward 5, all in Ogbia Constituency 2 were burnt at about 3:00 am Saturday morning, depriving electorates in the area of exercising their voting rights.

The Chief Press Secretary to the governor of State, Mr Daniel Alabrah, in a statement said “voting materials for Ogbia wards 2, 3, 4 and 5 under Constituency 2 in Ogbia Local Govt Area of Bayelsa State were carted away and destroyed.

Governor Diri described the act as highly condemnable and warned those behind any form of electoral violence in the state to desist forthwith as the full weight of the law would be brought down on the culprits.

The Bayelsa governor called on the Commissioner of Police to arrest the perpetrators of the act and ensure that anyone found culpable is brought to book.

He said his administration abhors any form of criminality, especially electoral violence as it prevents the electorate from exercising their franchise.

Diri restated his position that “elections should be about the ballot and not bullets as it is not a war situation.”
