Bayelsa Guber Election: Army flags off special operation ahead Nov 11

The Nigerian Army has initiated the “Still Waters Operation” in designated areas ahead of the November 11 governorship election in Bayelsa.

The operation, which commenced in Otuokpoti, Ogbia local government area, aims to curb criminal activities like pipeline vandalism, cultism, and kidnapping and prepare the troops for the upcoming governorship election in the state.

Brigadier General Sabisu Yakassai, the Commander of the 16th Brigade, Bayelsa State, disclosed this at the flag-off of the exercise in Otuokpoti, Ogbia local government area.

He stated that the location was chosen after considering many factors. The exercise is designed to cover all areas of security concerns in Bayelsa and involves all stakeholders within the security architecture of the state.

Speaking in the same vein, Major General Jamil Abdusalam, the General Officer Commanding 6th Division, mentioned that “Exercise Still Waters 3” would also focus on key aspects of cyber warfare to counter negative propaganda in the social media space and address other challenges experienced towards the end of the year.

He emphasised the readiness of Nigerian Army personnel to make the ultimate sacrifice for the peace and security of Nigeria, commending commanders from other security formations for their participation and support in efforts to maintain peace and security.

Earlier, Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, stressed the importance of security in delivering good governance to the people. He emphasised the commitment and support of his administration to efforts by security agencies to promote security in the state.

Diri highlighted that his administration has prioritised the security of lives and property since assuming office. He described the operation as a welcome development, especially during the approaching yuletide season and the off-cycle governorship election in Bayelsa.

The governor appreciated the military’s efforts in reducing crime and criminality in the state, urging them to continue being proactive and collaborate with the state government to maintain peace in Bayelsa.

Diri credited the success of previous exercises for the peaceful yuletide period in the state and commended the Chief of Army Staff for sustaining the exercise. He expressed optimism that this year’s operation would be even more successful.

In his words, “In our state, we are in a period called the ’ember’ months, which attract criminal activities. So, it is necessary to put in place the machinery to check criminal activities, especially in preparation for the governorship election.

Since assuming office, I have given priority to the security of our people, and this is the essence of good governance.

I have ensured that our people sleep with their two eyes closed. I appreciate the sacrifices and commitment of our gallant forces, which have helped reduce crime in our state.

As a government, we commend the officers and men for their commitment to duty and for conducting this important military exercise, which covers the entire state. We will collaborate with the 16th Brigade to promote peace and security.”

The event featured a gunboat display, highlighting the military’s readiness to tackle any security threats.
