Tragedy struck in Niger State in the early hours of Tuesday, as no fewer than 21 persons were killed and about 40 others kidnapped in a renewed armed bandits attack on Shiroro communities in Shiroro Local Government Area of the state.
Tribune Online gathered that the attack allegedly occurred when about over 250 to 300 gunmen on motorcycles stormed four villages of Kurege Sabon Gida, Sararai and Rafin Kanya, shooting sporadically, killing some persons and abducted many others.
An eye witness who is also an indigene of Shiroro local government council, Malam Galadima Salisu, informed our reporter in an interview by telephone in Minna that unless governments at all levels come to the aid of the troubled communities, the citizens were entertaining fears that the affected communities and its environs could be taken over by unruly armed bandits who operated at will.
However, concerted efforts to contact the Police Public Relations Officer( PPRO) Niger State Command, of the Nigeria Police, ASP Wasiu Abiodun, for comments on the attacks did not yield any positive result.
But when contacted on telephone Secretary to the State Government, Ahmed Ibrahim Matane, confirmed the incidence but denied knowledge of the actual number of the victims killed.
Ahmed Ibrahim Matane thereby maintained that Niger State Government was not leaving any stones unturned within its powers to profer solution to the recurring incidents of banditry attacks and other crimes and criminality in parts of the state bedevilling its people.
