Balogun calls for immortalisation of Richard Akinjide

The Senator representing Oyo South in the National Assembly, Senator Kola Balogun, has called for the immortalisation of legal icon and elder statesman, Chief Richard Akinjide, who passed away on April 24.

Senator Balogun moved the motion on the floor of the Senate while formally informing the lawmakers about the demise of Chief Akinjide.

While calling for a minute silence in honour of the deceased, he urged the Senate to send a condolence letter to the family of the distinguished and seasoned politician.

In his tribute, Senator Balogun described Chief Akinjide as an industrious legal luminary a nationalist per excellence and patriot of great renown.

Chief Akinjide was born 85 years ago. He attended Oduduwa College, Ile-Ife and passed out with grade one distinction. He proceeded to the United Kingdom for higher education and was afterwards called to the English bar.

In Nigeria, he set up Akinjide and co chambers.

He was Minister of Education during the regime of Alhaji Tafawa Balewa and Minister of Justice and Attorney General during Alhaji Shehu Shagari’s era.

Chief Akinjide was the architect of the legal mathematics of 122/3 which was adopted by the Supreme Court to resolve the presidential debacle of 1979.
