Aseyin throne: Princess kick, say Prince Semiu not properly selected as Aseyin-elect

Princess of some of the royal families in Iseyin, headquarters of Iseyin Local Government Area of Oyo State who are also vying for the Aseyin throne, have kicked against the choice of Prince Olawale Semiu Oyebola recently announced as the new Aseyin by the state government.

The Princess, who spoke in Iseyin, said they were not satisfied with the process through which a new Aseyin-elect was selected, saying traditional means known to the community was jettisoned against their wishes and those of some other stakeholders.

According to them, the kingmakers resorted to voting instead of submitting to the dictates of the Ifa oracle, which they said should have been the sole decider of who becomes the Aseyin of Iseyin.

Speaking in Iseyin at the weekend, the Aseyin princes namely: Azeez Olamilekan of the Akando Family; Tajudeen Sanusi of the Eyinade Family and Alhaji Abdulakeem Akeusola of the Aderibigbe Family, who spoke on behalf of their families, alleged that some chiefs and community leaders went against the tradition of the community in arriving at their choice.

Prince Olamilekan said Akando, Majaro and Olugbile lineages were the three from which the Aseyin is selected and claimed that the selection of the last Aseyin was made without the full representation of the 12 Akando families from which qualified candidates were presented.

Olamilekan argued that the hurried selection through voting without was against their tradition, saying the result of the Ifa divination carried out was not made known to them until they suddenly heard about a hurried voting session for the selection of a new Aseyin.

He said the princes of the Akando royal lineage found it unacceptable that Prince Oyebola was announced, saying his announcement meant that the other branches of the Akando royal lineage were cheated out of the selection process.

Speaking Alhaji Akeusola, said he was not rejecting the choice of Aseyin announced by the government because he sponsored a candidate, Rilwanulai Abiodun Aderibigbe, but because they were told to obtain forms for N650,000 each against the norm in the selection process.

Akeusola said: “We rejected the decision because it is strange to our culture in Iseyin. We do not pay money to obtain forms to become the Aseyin. We said we would have none of that because what we knew as tradition was for the eligible princes to cook and make a feast to signify their intention to aspire to the throne of Aseyin.

“What they did this time is strange to us because everything was based on money. When you jettison tradition because of money, the foundation of that act will not last. We want Iseyin to progress and most of us in Iseyin and out of the town are not satisfied because they bypassed tradition.

They demanded that the government should not go ahead with the process that led to the picking of the new Aseyin, saying “we demand a new process because we are not satisfied with what the kingmakers and the powers-that-be did. We are not satisfied because they did not follow the path of our forefathers.”

Prince Olawale Semiu Oyebola was recently announced as the new Aseyin of Iseyi following a process that had been ongoing for more than one year after the death of Oba Abdulgainyu Ologunebi.
