Fifty-one medical personnel and not 51 medical officers tested positive for COVID-19 so far in Bauchi State as was reported in some sections of the media recently.
The clarification was made on Sunday by the Executive Chairman of Bauchi State Primary Health Care Development Agency (BASPHCDA), Dr Rilwanu Mohammed, while speaking to journalists, saying that he was erroneously misquoted in the previous report that 51 medical officers tested positive for coronavirus.
He, however, affirmed that it was not medical officers, but medical personnel just as he revealed that the only one medical personnel who lost his life to COVID-19 in the state was a Consultant urging Journalists to always verify their facts before reporting.
The BASPHCDA boss also disclosed that 17 inmates in the correctional facility in the state have so far tested positive for Coronavirus infection, adding that an isolation centre has been established in the correctional centre to ensure that no inmate escaped from the facility.
Rilwanu Mohammed said that, “We have 51 medical personnel who have been infected so far in the state and out of this figure, one medical consultant lost his life in the line of duty.”
He added that, “Also, we currently have 17 inmates who have been confirmed positive for COVID-19, however, we created an isolation centre in the prison because we don’t want the prisoners to escape. Fourteen of them are currently on treatment in the prison isolation centre. These are the current vital information about the virus in the state.”
Rilwanu Mohammad who is also the chairman, Subcommittee on Contact tracing and Surveillance of the Bauchi State Taskforce Committee on COVID-19 and Lassa Fever, however, advised the health workers in the state to be very vigilant and ensure that they properly make use of their PPE at all times.
He further revealed that the state government was conducting active community search, taking samples from members of the communities for testing.
“We are engaging in massive active community search, we are going community by community trying to take samples of members of the communities,” said the BASPHCDA boss.
It will be recalled that it was widely reported in the media that 51 medical officers in the state had been infected with the COVID-19 disease a development that got the medical workers confused.
