Zamfara UBEB, stakeholders move to end corporal punishment in schools

THE Zamfara State government has called for the assistance of the United Nations International Children Education Fund (UNICEF) to help with strategies that can aid the ending of corporal punishment in schools under the Universal Basic Education in the state.

This was contained in a press release issued by the Public Relations Officer lI of the board, Ibrahim Musa Maizare.

According to the statement, the chairman of the board, Abubakar Aliyu, made the call during a meeting with critical education stakeholders, including security agencies in Gusau, the state capital.

Those who were summoned for stakeholders’ meeting which was organised by the board in conjunction with UNICEF included traditional rulers, members of the state School-Based Management Committees (SBMC) and other stakeholders.

The chairman urged the stakeholders to support government’s initiatives and measures that were considered as threats to the development of the education sector in the state.

He assured that the present administration was making effort that could help in reviving the education sector of the state.

The UNICEF consultant, Ahmad Hashim Tsanu, who presented a paper entitled ‘Overview on Violence against Schools: a Call to Stop Corporal Punishment in Schools,’ said all stakeholders and, indeed, the security agencies had a greater role to play in ending corporal punishments in all public schools.
