Zamfara begins construction of Ruga settlement

Governor Mohammad Bello Matawalle of Zamfara state has flagged off the construction of three Ruga Settlements in the state as part of efforts to end the incessant killings in the state.
Speaking during the foundation laying ceremony which was performed by Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal at Ranji, Sakida grazing reserve area of Maradun local government area of the State on Wednesday, he said the project was aimed at transforming the way of life of Fulani communities.
‘ Ruga project is aimed at transforming the way of life of Fulani communities in tune with modern realities and to bring an end to the perennial clashes of grazing land, watering points and cattle routes.
According to him, ‘ in modern days, efforts are being made all over the world to transform the system of cattle rearing and production from nomadic to sedentary.
He added that apart from transforming the life of Fulanis, the project is tied to broader issues of Security, ensuring harmonious coexistence and solidarity among people of the State especially farmers and herders.
He said when completed, the Ruga system will bring an end to the destruction of rural economy and scaring away of potential investors in the State.
He further explained that the current peace being enjoyed in the State is as a result of dialogue and reconciliation initiated by his administration and the tremendous success achieved.
Governor Bello also disclosed that the three pilots Ruga settlements will be constructed at the cost of  N2.8 Billion each and will be stocked with State of the earth facilities covering 100 hectares of land.
Laying the foundation, Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal commended the foresight of the Zamfara State Governor and urged him to maintain the tempo.
He also said the Ruga initiative will boost the economic status of the state and the Northern region as well as enhance the security situation.
The groundbreaking event of the Ruga settlement was attended by the State Deputy Governor, Barr Mahdi Aliyu Gusau, Speaker Zamfara State House of Assembly, Honourable Nasiru Maazu Magarya, Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Bala Bello Maru, Chief of Staff Government House, Col Bala Mande rtd, traditional rulers, politicians, civil servants, Fulani groups and many Security personnel.
It will be recalled that the ruga settlement was suspended by the Federal government after many states particularly those at the south-west and south-east kicked against it.
