Youths chase away traditional ruler over death of policeman in Ondo community

Published by

Angry youths from Itaogbolu community in Akure North Local Government area of Ondo State, on Monday, chased away the traditional ruler of the town, Oba Idowu Faborode, the Ogbolu of Itaogbolu, from his palace following the killing of a police officer from the area identified as Ayo Oloyede.

The police officer who was attached to the Anti-Cultism Unit of the Ondo State Police Command was said to have died in an auto accident along with the community on Sunday.

A source within the community said the youth were irked by the silence of the traditional ruler, saying the monarch has failed to perform his function as well as protect his subjects.

He explained that late Oloyede visited his mother and were heading back to Akure when the commercial vehicle conveying them somersaulted severely between Itaogbolu and Odudu village.

The youths who were said to regard late Oloyede as a good man who always attends to their needs mobilised and chased out Oba Faborode out of his palace after news of Ayodele’s death spread into town.

The state police spokesman, ASP Tee Leo Ikoro, said the youth went on a rampage because of the death of a police officer.

“Yes, we got information some youths in Itaogbolu went on a rampage and chased the monarch out of his sit.

“We really don’t understand what is the connection between the dead policeman in an accident and the monarch of the town.

“Our men are on the ground to put the situation under control as we await more details from our investigation,” he said.
