Yellow fever spreads to two more LGAs, as Ortom flags off vaccination

Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, on Monday, flagged off the vaccination against yellow fever at IBB Square, Makurdi.

The governor charged council chairmen, traditional rulers and religious organisations to join hands in the campaign to have everyone vaccinated

Governor Ortom who congratulated the people of the state for polio-free status said that his administration released N10m counter part-fund for logistics and also made available the sum of N29 million to complete the permanent site of primary health care board.

The Supervisory Commissioner, Ministry of Health, Dr Godwin Eyiwona, said that Yellow Fever which was first noticed and had killed 20 people in Ogbadibo Local Government Area of the state had spread to two other council areas.

Dr Eyiwona said that the disease had spread to the neighbouring Okpokwu and Ado Local Government Areas.

According to Eyiwona, “The flag-off is to cover 20 Local Government Areas of the state, aside from the three local governments that were covered last year.

“Yellow Fever was discovered in Ogbadibo Local Government Area recently and it has spread to Okpokwu and Ado LGAs, the state government has promptly swung into action to see that people are vaccinated against the disease.

He added that every person from nine months to 44 years should come for vaccination.

The Executive Secretary, Primary Health Care Board, Dr Ben Ageda, said that 1,586 Adhoc staff were recruited to vaccinate over four million people in the 243 council wards of the state adding that the remaining 34 wards were previously vaccinated during outbreaks.

“The strategies adopted for this campaigns is to use fixed Post Vaccination teams, Mobile teams and Extra teams to cover 4 million bundled doses of Yellow Fever Vaccines from national cold stores for the exercise, and all COVID-19 Preventive Protocols will be observed by the vaccination team,” Ageda said.
