Anambra State has joined the rest of the world in celebrating world malaria day with a call on the citizens to explore the use of synthetic medication in the treatment of malaria rather than resort to the use of local herbs and other self orthodox medication.
Tribune Online gathered that the theme for this year 2021 World Malaria Day is “Zero Malaria-Draw the Line Against Malaria.
The State Commissioner for Health, Dr Vincent Okpala, in a press briefing to mark the day, explained that malaria is the most significant health problem in Nigeria and Africa continent at large.
Dr Okpala further disclosed that the Anambra State government under the watch of Governor Willie Obiano with the support from International Health Organizations and the Federal Ministry of Health has instituted several measures which according to him include: distribution of long-lasting insecticidal net to families, indoor residential spraying and support in the reduction of mosquitoes breeding sites as well as the use of intermittent preventive therapy.
He maintained that the objective of global malaria day is to promote the use of preventive measures against malaria and as well sensitise people on the cause and appropriate case management for malaria.
Not only that, other objectives include, to inform the general public on the use of RDT in the prompt diagnosis of malaria as an alternative to microscopy and to inform people about the malaria scourge and the disease burden, he stated.
The Project manager, Anambra State Malaria Elimination Booster Project, Pharmacist Nonso Ndudi, who also spoke, said that Anambra has declared war on the environment to reduce the mosquitoes attack which causes malaria.
He disclosed that the Agency under his care has distributed eighty-six thousand mosquito nets to Primary and secondary schools, Churches and Primary Health care centres for pregnant women across the 21 local government area of the state to help eliminate the disease.
He advised residents to always keep their environment clean and avoid self medications.
