In a bid to put an end to flooding and achieve a clean and safe environment, the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) in collaboration with the Nigerian Institution of Environment Engineers has harped on the indiscriminate activities of waste disposal.
This was made known at an event that was held physically and via zoom on Monday at the NSE Secretariat in Ibadan the Oyo State capital in commemoration of the 2021 World Environment Day.
Speaking on the importance of the day, the guest speaker, a hydraulic expert, Stephen Adeniji, explained that the world environment day “since it began in 1974 has grown to become a global platform for public outreach that is widely celebrated in over 100 countries.”
Speaking on the topic “Flood mitigation measures in Ibadan Metropolis: Ibadan urban flood management project (IUFMP) experience,” he said that “flood risk management is a strategy that coordinates efforts to tackle flooding and its impacts.”
The hydraulic expert who blamed the past happenings of flooding on lack of effective waste management within the city, poorly controlled development in the natural flood plains, inadequate and poorly maintained roadways and hydraulic infrastructure and other causes explained that to avoid the future risk of flooding more awarenesses is needed to be created.
He lamented the effects of the flood on structures of housing, agriculture, road and transport, loss of lives.
Adeniji also stated that to put an end to flooding in Ibadan, Ibadan flood risk management and drainage master plan was organised to assess the flood hazards that affect Ibadan built-up areas and to construct flood scenarios in order to develop mitigation measures and a basis for flood resilience and disruption of social-economic activities.
Also speaking, the chairman of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, (NSE) Ibadan branch, Dr Wasiu Ajagbe, stated that the guest speaker’s presentation goes along with the 2021 World environment day’s theme: “Ecosystem Restoration.”
He hinted that an initiative “Clean Ibadan Ambassador (CIA) will be launched soon to tackle environmental degradation, adding that to achieve this, the Oyo State Ministry of Environment and other stakeholders have been contacted towards the successful launch of the initiative.
