Woman beats five-year-old stepson to death in Ogun

Shukurat Olufowobi, 30, has been arrested by the men of the Ogun State Police Command for allegedly beating her five-year-old stepson, Azeem, to death.

The incident according to a statement by the Command’s image-maker, Abimbola Oyeyemi, happened at Oshodi -Oke area of Ogijo, in Sagamu Local Government Area of the state.

Oyeyemi said the tragic incident happened on Sunday, at about 12.30 pm when the suspect was reported to have hit the deceased with an object which resulted in skull injury.

The victim was said to have died as a result of the injury.

The PPRO in the statement added that the suspect and her husband hurriedly took the deceased to Ajah area of Lagos State for burial.

However, some members of the community who got wind of the incident informed the Police at the Ogijo Division about the incident.

The Divisional Police Officer, CSP Suleman Muhammed, upon receiving the information was said to have mobilised his men to the scene of the incident.

The detectives arrested the couple who were met packing their belongings, in their bid to flee from the area.

It was gathered that the couple, had earlier taken the boy to a nurse for treatment before the unfortunate happened.

The PPRO said, “preliminary investigation revealed that the woman has been maltreating the victim whose mother has separated from the father due to unreconcilable differences.

“The boy was beaten on the head with a heavy object which caused him a broken skull resulting to his eventual death. The nurse who gave the victim first aid treatment had told the couple about her observation.

The stepmother pleaded with the nurse to lie about the cause of the boy’s death, but she (nurse) refused, saying such is against the ethics of her profession.

“The couple, Ayuba Olufowobi and Shukurat Olufowobi, are currently undergoing interrogation at Ogijo divisional headquarters and they were helping the police in their investigation.”
