Actor and movie producer, Sahid Balogun has thrown his weight behind the leadership of the Nigerian Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), led by its executive director, Mr Adedayo Thomas, calling on his colleagues in the English and Yoruba movies sector to support the policies being introduced by the board to create a proper structure for the creative industry.
Balogun, who is the President of The Golden Movie Ambassadors (TGMA), said he was aware that some of the policies being introduced by the NFVCB to reposition movie-making business in the country did not sit well with some stakeholders in the industry, while urging the leadership of associations in the industry to embrace the new policies.
Mr Thomas who was recently reappointed by President Muhammadu Buhari after his four-year tenure ended on March 21, 2021 was said to have been holding series of meetings with stakeholders in the industry in order to chart a new way forward for movie production and better rewards for movie practitioners.
One of the new policies that was said to be causing ripples among stakeholders is the directive from NFVCB asking movie producers and actors to register active members of their associations with the board as this would check the indiscriminate release of movies and ensure that movies released have been certified okay for public consumption.
Describing Adedayo as a man whose leadership qualities would transform the business of movie-making and restore the lost glory of the industry, Balogun said he didn’t like the decision of the board initially but he changed his position when he realised that the movie industry, especially its practitioners would gain a lot from the reforms.
“I am happy with the reforms that are being introduced into our business. It will help us to organise ourselves better and know who is an active member of a particular association. We have been talking about reforms for many years but nothing has been done. Now that there is somebody who is ready to take the bull by the horns, I think it is wise that we allow things work this time,” he said.
With TGMA also registered with NFVCB and its social media and online platforms running actively, Balogun added that it is a new dawn for the association as he claimed that many practitioners who were skeptical about joining the association have begun to show interest.
