Shingles is caused by the reactivation of the varicella-zostervirus (VZV). This is the same virus that causes chickenpox. After recovering from chickenpox, the virus stays inactive in nerve tissues and can reactivate later as shingles.

The presentation includes Pain, burning, tingling, or numbness (usually on one side of the body), Itching or skin sensitivity and Flu-like symptoms (fever, headache, fatigue). In addition, red patches or spots appear after a few days, with fluid-filled blisters form in clusters and blisters break open, crust over, and heal within 2-4 weeks.

Other possible symptoms are; sensitivity to light, upset stomach or nausea and muscle weakness (in severe cases)
