What attracts us to books/novels

Respondents are students of ADESINA COLLEGE IBADAN, Alagbayun, Akobo, Ibadan.

The first thing that attracts me to a book is the name while the pictures inside it follow. The third thing is the author because I might have read one of the author’s books before and got familiar with his/her ability. I do go through the summery to what to expect, whether the story would affect me positively or negatively. The first two pages are also of importance to me because if it is interesting, it gets one encouraged to read on.

When I see a book, what first attracts me is the title  and if it is about 100-150 pages. After that, I check if it is a prose or drama and the summary of the writer about the book. A vital thing I also look out for is a book that tells me the story of a veteran on his/her job. I bought a book written by Ben Carson titled “Gifted Hands,” though it has more than my preferred number of pages, I still read it because of what I have heard about the author. After reading it, it motivated me to decide to become a Neurosurgeon in future.

Oluwajomiloju Oladimeji, 14 yrs old, JSS 3

The title of books attracts me to read. Books on adventure, history, etc are my favourite. Also, colours of book covers fascinate me. Chapters of a book are also a reason I consider before picking a book because I like books with limited number of chapters. I look out for books from authors like Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie because of her story lines.

Temilade Adelakin, 15 yrs old, SSS 2

Anyone would be attracted to a book with a hilarious title. I like books with adventurous and fascinating titles such as “Macbeth,” “The Three Musketeers,” “The Magic Ice Cream,” and so on. Another factor that draws me to a book is the author. Many books have been written by authors who have made landmarks in the literary world such as William Shakespeare, Chinua Achebe and Wole Soyinka.

I know a popular saying that a book should not be judged by its cover but packaging of a book is very important in its marketing. I love books with numerous chapters, I never get tired.

Benedict Babalola, 13 yrs old, JSS 2

These are some of the qualities that attract me to a book: Types of books such as religious, educational, social, etc but I prefer educational texts to others because they impart knowledge. I choose historical, autobiographical/biographical and memoirs which will help me to learn from the good deeds and mistakes of past leaders. Fewer number of pages with main points for easy understanding is also important before I pick a book. The quality of the book also attracts me. Here, I look out for the colours, size, and texture.

Lois Moyosore, 15 yrs old, SSS 1

The graphic design and colour of a book easily draw my attention to a book because pictures give an insight to content of a book. The author also is another thing that contributes to my choice. I addition to these, themes of novels are of importance before I pick a book to read. Letterings of the text and diction also gets one attracted to a book or novel.

Mololuwa Alao, 13 yrs old, JSS 3

My favourite authors are Ben Carson, Enid Blyton, Buchi Emecheta and Karen Kingsbury. When I walk into a bookstore, the cover of a book, summary at the back of the book, its name,  colour, size, illustrations, are also taken into consideration before I buy a book.

Habeeb Aminu, 14 yrs old, SSS 1

I like to be inspired by novels and books when I read them and also wish to inspire the upcoming generation too. I am not a fan of reading books so I decide to go with mini books that will have positive impact on lives. I get attracted to a novel with funny characters which would make me laugh all through my reading. However, the colour of a book makes me eager to read and discover the reason for it as well as titles that would push me to ask questions.
