Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to frequently sharpen the knowledge and skills of its workforce.
Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Tokunbo Wahab, gave this impression at a 3–day capacity building retreat organised by his office for the management staff of the office and its agencies, recently.
He said capacity development of human resources in the employ of government is crucial to achieving success in the Babajide Sanwo-Olu led administration’s Six Pillars Development agenda, known as T.H.E.M.E.S, which include education and technology.
He said the government believes that public\civil servants are not only partners in progress but drivers of its policies and programmes, hence the need for frequent training and retraining for their optimal performance.
Mr Wahab in a statement made available by the head of the public affairs unit of his office, Mr Adesoye Oyelami, explained that the retreat with the theme: “Building a Healthy Work- Culture through Self -Leadership, Synergy and Technical Transfer of Knowledge to Practice,” was designed to assess the performance of the office vis-a-vis its mandates over the last two years for the purpose of going forward.
He said the programme had really helped the management to know its areas of stronghold and weakness and what to do to fill in the gap for improved performance.
While pointing out that achieving success by the Office in its ministerial responsibilities requires hard work, unity of purpose and synergy from all agencies, departments and units, and match with genuine commitment, he said the government is always ready to provide the necessary support to its workforce to achieve the common goals.
He urged participants to imbibe the culture of excellence and the new work order as the current practice globally.
He, however, commended the state’s Agency for Mass Education for training and graduating a total of 703 persons in different vocations and entrepreneurship from across the seven vocational centres in the state.
He asked the agency to come up with more advocacy programmes targeted at poverty eradication, youth empowerment and economic self-reliance.
In his own remarks earlier, Permanent Secretary in the office, Mr Adeniran Kasali, said participants were expected to demonstrate the new knowledge and exposure they gained at the retreat and share same with others so as to jointly effect positive change when they get back to their duty posts.
He said part of the recommendations of participants was to redefine roles of some departments as observed to be overlapped and also extend similar training programmes to principal officers of various state-owned Tertiary Institutions under the purview of the office.
He said all was to move the office and the state government by extension forwards in their roles to the people of Lagos State.
