Unpaid pension/gratuity : Southwest members threaten to sue governors

Published by

The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) has threatened to institute a lawsuit against governors in the South West region over unpaid pension and gratuity to its members.

The senior citizens made this known  after the bi-monthly meeting of the union held at the NUP Secretariat in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti state.

In a communique read to newsmen by the Southwest Chairman of the union, Elder Ayo Kumapayi, the pensioners expressed dissatisfaction on how governors of Oyo, Ogun, Ondo, Ekiti, Osun and Lagos states are paying lip service to their plights.

Kumapayi said the union was ready to test the constitutionality of such ill-treatment and seek redress in the court.

“You would recall the last time we met in Lagos, that we stated that we want to test the constitutionality of our governors not attending to pensioners on time.

“I want to tell you that the Nigeria Union of Pensioners( NUP), southwest region, with the backing of the national body, has concluded arrangements to test the legality of this constitutionality of our governors not attending to us on time.

“As I speak presently we still have pensioners earning below two thousand naira monthly. It’s quite unfortunate and unacceptable so, we want the government to do something about it.

” The union will reveal its decision on this issue by November after the national executive committee meeting slated for Ibadan,” he said.

They called on the government to make the National Health Insurance scheme  accessible to all pensioners by reducing the price for easy capturing of members.

The pensioners hailed the move by House of Representatives to  prohibit  non-payment of workers and pensioners by employers, including imposing interest on salary and pension, paid after due date.
