Unmasking 60-yr-old Duane,Tupac Shakur’s murder suspect

Twenty seven years after Tupac Shakur was gunned down, near the Las Vegas Strip, on Sept. 7th, 1996, Duane Keith Davis, now 60 years old, has been arrested as the murder suspect.

Duane ‘Keffe D” Davis was born in Compton, California. He’s known to many in the entertainment world as “Keffe D,” a self-professed member of the California-based gang, the South Side Compton Crips (SSCC).

Duane rose to fame as one of the only living witnesses to Shakur’s shooting after being featured in television networks including A&E, USA Network and Fox.

He was a leader of the South Side Compton Crips gang when he planned his revenge against Shakur. In 2019, he released a tell-all memoir called “Compton Street Legend.” In the memoir, he said he had risen up the ranks at the South California notorious gang to become a “shot caller,” and was running a multi-million-dollar drug empire nationwide.

Duane grew up in a middle-class black family. As one of 12 siblings, Davis grew up surrounded by family. Duane purchased a house in Compton and two new cars for his parents, his mother a homemaker from Texas, and his father, a Marine from Virginia who were excited by the promise and possibility of America. When they moved to their block in 1965, Duane said, their family was the only Black one. Little by little, White families started to move away “like cockroaches fleeing when the lights were turned on,” Duane wrote.

His mother died from colon cancer in 1980, when he was 15. In 2014 he got the same cancer — now in remission — that killed his mother. Two of his brothers also died: one from cancer, and the other was shot in the streets of Compton.

According to Duane’s account of the night of the shooting, Shakur and members of his entourage had come to watch the Mike Tyson fight at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Shakur and Knight saw Duane’s nephew Orlando Anderson in the hotel.

Surveillance footage showed Shakur and Knight beating Duane’s nephew, and the fight was stopped by hotel employees. News of the fight got back to Duane,  who since then planned a revenge that led to Shakur’s death.

Duane  got a firearm from a “close associate,” and gathered Orlando Anderson, Terrance Brown and Deandre Smith to go with him in the infamous white Cadillac.

On July 17, Las Vegas Police searched Duane’s  house in Henderson, Nevada. Detectives reported on the search warrant collecting multiple computers, 40-calibre bullets, “tubs containing photographs,” a cell phone and a hard drive. They also took a magazine that featured Shakur, and a copy of “Compton Street Legend.”

Duane is currently being charged with one count of murder with use of a deadly weapon and with the intent to promote, further or assist a criminal gang, Clark County District Attorney, Steven B. Wolfson told reporters during a Friday press conference.

Duane is slated to appear in court over the next few days on the murder charge after being indicted by a grand jury.
